Memorize and Reflect
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. ([bible]1 Peter 5:6[/bible])
Thank Jesus for humbling Himself, leaving heaven, and giving His life on the cross for you. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you true, deep, and lasting humility. Confess to the Lord where you have been self-centered and self-seeking.
“Live It!” Challenge
Watch the Video - Do a search on YouTube for “You Are Not Special” and watch the Wellesley High School Commencement speech. It is less than 13 minutes long, but worth your time. It is intended to remind us that we should not over-esteem ourselves, above others! Rather, we should learn that all people are special. Watch and let the message sink in.
Small Group Discussion
Tell about a person in your life who lives with authentic humility. What is it about how this person lives in the flow of a normal day that makes you say they are truly humble?
When a person is humble, how does this impact the way they:
· See themselves
· See others
· See God
Read: Philippians 2:1-11 In verse 1 the Apostle Paul says, “If” four times. What are the specific things Paul is talking about? How are each of these true in your life?
In verse 2 Paul says, “Then” do specific things (v.2-5). What are these things? How can you take a step forward in doing one or more of these things?
In the rest of the passage, we see Jesus and his example of humility. What do we learn from the example of Jesus? What can you do to more intentionally follow the example of Jesus as you grow in humility?
What is one way you can serve another person in a sacrificial way? How might this strengthen your relationship?
How can humbly admitting when you are wrong strengthen your relationships? How does demanding that we are always right hurt our relationships?
What are good questions we can ask other people that will help us learn more about them and show that we love and care about them?
We can bless people with this simple reminder: ICNU. This is simply telling other people the good things we see in them. We say, “This is what I C in U!” Who is one person you need to bless and encourage with your words and what do you need to tell this person?
