Memorize and Reflect

In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted… (2 Timothy 3:12)

Prayer Direction

Thank Jesus for His willingness to suffer and sacrifice for you. Commit to doing your best to live a life that is surrendered to Jesus. Pray for courage and strength to make willing sacrifices for His glory. Invite the Holy Spirit to show you what you can sacrifice for the glory of God.

“Live It!” Challenge

Count the Cost: Identify one sacrifice you can make that will align your life more closely and fully to the will of Jesus. Why have you been holding this back? What step can you take to release this to God’s will, even if it is hard to do and costs you?

Small Group Discussion

  1. What are some of the sacrifices that the Bible calls Christians to make as we seek to follow Jesus? What gets in the way of us making these sacrifices and counting the cost?

  2. What are the signs that our world encourages and even celebrates self-centeredness?

  3. Tell about a person in your life who has been a model and clear example of living a life of sacrifice and counting the cost of following Jesus. How has the example of this person inspired you to live more for Jesus?

  4. Read: 2 Timothy 3:1-5. How are you seeing one or more of these attitudes (actions) alive in our culture today? How is the acceptance of these traits growing in our culture?

  5. Read: 2 Timothy 3:10-11 and 2 Corinthians 11:23-29. How did the apostle Paul view his sufferings and the persecutions he faced?

  6. How can enduring suffering (that honors Jesus) grow our faith and deepen our relationship with Jesus? Share about a time (small or large) that you suffered for following Jesus and describe how this impacted your faith and relationship with the Savior.

  7. Read: 2 Timothy 3:12-13 and Matthew 16:24-25. How did both Jesus and the Apostle Paul suffer in their faithfulness to God?

  8. Why do you think many Christians believe they will not suffer and struggle if they are in God’s will? What is wrong with this outlook on the Christian faith?

  9. How can we live with a wise balance of delighting in the fun, safe, smooth-sailing times of life and also be ready to honor Jesus in the hard, painful, and difficult times of suffering for the sake of Jesus?

  10. Why is Christian community so important in the smooth times and the stormy times? How can you support the members of your group who are facing times of loss, pain, and suffering right now?
