Memorize and Reflect

“When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.” ([bible]Nehemiah 1:4 [/bible])

Prayer Direction

Lord, teach me to pray, to talk with you, to pour out my heart! Pray for a life that has a healthy and consistent rhythm of prayer infused into every day. Lift up specific needs you have, and needs in the lives of people you love.

“Live It!” Challenge

Challenge- Pray for Your Church LeadersGo onto the Shoreline website three times in the coming week. The first time, pull up the pictures of your pastors and pray for each by name. The next time, do the same for your directors. On the third day, pray for the rest of our staff. Ask God to fill, protect, and lead your staff as we lead people toward Jesus.

Small Group Discussion

  1. Who taught you how to pray and what did they teach you? Tell about things you learned about prayer while you were growing up that were particularly helpful. What was not helpful?

  2. Read: Nehemiah 1:1-4
Why was Nehemiah so moved with emotion and so passionate in his prayers? Tell about something in your life, right now, that you are being moved to pray passionately about. How can your group members join you in prayer?

  3. Read: Nehemiah 1:5-11
How did Nehemiah address God? How do you normally address God in prayer? What are 10-15 other ways we might address God that reveal who He is and how we view Him and why is it helpful to used some of these titles for God?

  4. How does Nehemiah affirm God’s faithfulness? What is one way God has been faithful and powerful in your life in recent months?

  5. Nehemiah was persistent in his prayers…he kept crying out to God over time. Why is persistence important? What is a long-term prayer you have been bringing to God and how can your group members enter this prayer journey with you?

  6. Nehemiah let the teaching of the Bible guide his prayers. What is one passage in the Bible that you can use as a guide for prayer? Share this with your group and talk about how it helps you pray.

  7. How can we make prayer a part of the big and little parts of a normal day? Tell about how you keep prayer alive in the flow of your day.
