Memorize and Reflect

Proverbs 12:18 The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Prayer Direction

Ask God to help you speak with truth balanced with tender love for those who hear your words. Ask God to give you words of blessing and encouragement to speak to the people He places in your life.

“Live It!” Challenge

Dare to Bless – Think of one person God has placed in your life that needs a word of blessing and encouragement. Then, list five positive and kind (honest) things you can say to this person. Send them a text, email, or hand-written letter expressing two or three things. If you are more comfortable speaking these words, give them a call or find a time to meet face to face, and be sure to express these words of blessing.

Small Group Discussion

  1. What was one of the lessons about our words and communication from Sunday’s message that hit you? How can you live out what you learned in your daily life?

  2. Read: Proverbs 18:21 and Proverbs 12:18. Share an example of how you have experienced life and healing through another person's gracious and kind words.

  3. Tell about how you or someone you love has experienced pain, hurt, and even relational death through thoughtless and mean-spirited words (being careful not to use names or specifics that would cause others to know who you are talking about).

  4. Read: Ephesians 4:14-16. Why is it essential for us to speak truthful words and learn to identify when lies are being spoken?

  5. Read: Colossians 4:5-6. What are examples of gracious words? How can we speak more of these kinds of words in our relationships?

  6. Read: James 1:19-21. How can listening be a source of healing and lead to wholeness in our relationships? How can we know someone is really listening?

  7. Tell about a person in your life who listens well, speaks graciously, and models communication that shows the presence of Jesus. What have you learned from this person, and how might it positively impact your relationships?
