Memorize and Reflect

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Philippians 4:6)

Prayer Direction

Ask God to help you talk to Him quickly and in trust every time you feel worry creeping into your life. Thank God that He has called you His beloved child, a royal priest, and part of His holy family. Invite the Holy Spirit to convict you of one specific hidden or open sin in your life, and pray for the resurrection power of Jesus to help you stop and walk away from this sin.

“Live It!” Challenge

Stop and Start: Identify one action (from Colossians 3:8-9) that you need to stop. Then, identify one action you need to start (from Colossians 3:12-13). Make a commitment to stop one action and start one action. Then, ask a member of your group or a close Christian friend to pray for you and keep you accountable.

Small Group Discussion

  1. Tell about one area of worry or anxiety in your life that you have faced in the past or are facing today. When does this tend to show up and how does it impact your life?

  2. What advice or counsel have you received through your life to help you deal with anxiety and worry? What advice has been helpful? What has not been helpful for you?

  3. Read: Philippians 4:6-7. What does this passage seem to say about how God views anxiety? What basic counsel is the apostle Paul giving for how we can battle anxiety and worry in our life?

  4. How can prayer (filled with thanksgiving) actually battle anxiety and change our view of the world? What might happen if you began praying every time you felt anxiety creeping into your mind and heart?

  5. Read: 1 Peter 2:4-5 and 9-10. What does this passage teach us about the God we love and worship? What does this passage say about all those who have placed their faith in Jesus?

  6. What does it mean to be a royal priest? How might our lives change if we really believed that this is who we are?

  7. We are told that we can proclaim and declare the praises of Jesus, who called us out of spiritual darkness and into the light of His love. What are one or two declarations of praise you can give about who Jesus is and what He has done for you?

  8. Read: Colossians 3:8-9 and 12-15. What behaviors are we told to get rid of in Colossians 3:8-9? What is one attitude or action you need to take off and get out of your life? How can your group members pray for you and keep you accountable to act on this? If you take action on this, how might this action help reduce the anxiety in your life?

  9. What behaviors are we told to embrace and live out in Colossians 3:12-15? What is one action you need to start and deepen in your life? How can your group members pray for you and keep you accountable to take this step forward? If you take action on this, how might this action increase the peace in your life?

  10. Tell about one area of worry or anxiety in your life that you have faced in the past or are facing today. When does this tend to show up and how does it impact your life?
