Memorize and Reflect

James 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Prayer Direction

Pray that your heart will be open before God. Give thanks to God for Jesus’ presence and abundant grace in your life. Ask him to give you a sense of calm and an attitude to serve others.

“Live It!” Challenge

Take a look at your life and behaviors—are there ways that you are lying to or deceiving yourself? How can you better respond to what God is doing inside of you? What is one thing in your relationships with others that you could do differently?

Small Group Discussion

  1. Read and reflect on James 1:19-25. What stands out to you personally in this passage?

  2. How do you respond to others? Do you listen and try to understand first or react most of the time? What can you do differently?

  3. Is reading God’s Word a challenge for you? How do you practice reading and listening to God’s Word?

  4. We can all be selfish. How do you deal with your own inner life and the behaviors that come out of that? How do you address or get rid of some of these negative attitudes and behaviors?

  5. As you read James 1, what do you think God is asking you to do about it? “Don’t merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” How is God’s Spirit inviting you to respond?

  6. How do you think God’s Word has been “implanted” in you? Why is this so important for us as followers of Christ?

  7. How does God’s Word give us freedom? How does this freedom bless and strengthen you?

  8. Give an example of when you have acted on God’s Word and been able to bless someone else because of it.
