Memorize and Reflect

If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me. (Philemon 1:18)

Prayer Direction

Thank God for His amazing forgiveness of you through Jesus. Pray for a deeper understanding of the greatness of His grace and forgiveness. Ask God to help you grow in your ability to extend forgiveness quickly, for the long term, and with the heart of Jesus. Pray for one person you are having a hard time forgiving. Ask for God’s goodness and hand on their life.

“Live It!” Challenge

The Greatness of Grace: Make a list of at least ten things God has forgiven you of in the past year. Thank Him for His grace and then tear this list up, delete it, get rid of it and remember the greatness of God’s forgiveness and the price He paid to wash you clean.

Small Group Discussion

  1. What makes it so hard to forgive those who have wronged us?

  2. How does unforgiveness impact us? How might unforgiveness impact those we will not forgive? How does God view unforgiveness?

  3. Tell about a person you know who lives with a grace-filled and forgiving heart. What kind of attitudes and behaviors mark the life of this person?

  4. Read the Book of Philemon. What does the book of Philemon teach us about forgiveness (Both God’s forgiveness of us and our forgiveness of others)?

  5. How do the Apostle Paul’s attitudes and words undermine and battle against the cultural practice of slavery in his day?

  6. How has Jesus set us free from spiritual bondage? How can others be set free if we share the good news of Jesus with them?

  7. Philemon paints a picture of becoming spiritual family with other believers. Tell about a person who you see as spiritual family. How has Jesus bound your hearts and lives together?

  8. Philemon is self-sacrificing and generous. What can we learn from his example? What is one way you can be more generous and how can your group members pray for you as you grow in this area of your life?
