Memorize and Reflect

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1)

Prayer Direction

Thank God for His faithfulness and goodness. Praise His name and His sovereignty. Ask Him to reveal the path that He has laid for us and to strengthen our faith and build our resolve to follow that path, resting in the knowledge that He will be fighting for us, even as we enter into battle. Thank Him for the gift of Jesus that has guaranteed our salvation and eternal life in His presence.

“Live It!” Challenge

Am I seeking direction from God? Ask yourself if you are entering into worldly battles with the full faith that God is fighting for you. Are you grumbling to God because the way is challenging or are you being still and charging ahead?

Small Group Discussion

  1. Read: Exodus 14:14-15 Who was speaking in verse 14? Who was speaking in verse 15? Why are people so quick to take verse 14 by itself? How does this speak to our human nature when God is left out of the conversation?

  2. Why was Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt in the first place? (Exodus 3:7)

  3. What has brought the Israelites to the point of grumbling and wishing they could go back? Has God ever given them reason to doubt His deliverance?

  4. How do the Israelites respond when God delivers them from the pursuing Egyptian army? (Exodus 15)

  5. In the period leading up to the Exodus from Egypt, God, through Moses, brought plagues upon the land and the people of Egypt. As these plagues progressed and Pharaoh began to see the greatness of God, he would even agree to let the Israelites go if Moses would pray to God to bring relief. And as soon as the the plague would stop, God would harden Pharaoh’s heart and he would not let the Israelites go. How is this pattern similar to the cycle we see the Israelites engaged in through Exodus 14 and Exodus 15?

  6. In the case of Pharaoh, God was hardening his heart. Who was responsible for the changes in attitude of the Israelites throughout the Exodus? Have you ever been in a role similar to God’s in the Exodus, such as a parent with a child? How does it feel in this type of situation when you are not appreciated and/or obeyed? How do you think God feels when we lose our faith in Him?

  7. What are you currently struggling with where you are not being “still” (not grumbling)? What can you do to move forward boldly with the faith that God is fighting with you?

  8. What encouragement does Paul give us with regard to keeping our faith strong? (Hebrews 12:1-3)
