Memorize and Reflect

Matthew 6:24
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Prayer Direction

Ask God to give you a growing awareness of His lavish love and provision in your life. Pray for courage and joy as you seek to be generous and share what God has placed in your care. Dare to ask God to help you increase your giving to the point where you become lavish like the God you follow and serve.

“Live It!” Challenge

My Next Step – Take time to do an honest and thoughtful self-assessment of how much you give toward the work of Jesus through the church you attend and other ministries that preach Jesus. Identify one way you can take a practical step forward in being lavish in your generosity, then do it!

Small Group Discussion

  1. Who is one person in your life that has been an example of lavish giving? What are one or two things about this person that inspire you?

  2. When a non-believer encounters a person who is a Christian but is stingy and very slow to share what they have, what possible messages can this send about Christians in general and even Jesus?

  3. Read: Matthew 6:2. Give some examples of people who have less than you. How can you show the lavish love and goodness of God with these people in many different ways?

  4. Read: Matthew 6:3-4. What can it look like when Christians try to be flashy and show off with their giving? What are examples of what it can look like when a believer gives with no effort to make themselves look good?

  5. Read: Matthew 6:19-21. What are examples of what it looks like when we are storing up treasures on earth? What are specific ways we can store up treasures in heaven?

  6. Read: Matthew 6:24. What are some of the ways our world and culture can entice us to make money and material things our master? What are ways we can battle against this temptation?

  7. Read: 1 Timothy 6:17-18. What do you think it means to be “rich in this present world”? Why do most of us have a hard time seeing ourselves as “Rich in this world”?

  8. What are some practical ways we can be “rich in good deeds”? How can this show the presence of Jesus in our lives?

  9. What are ways we can be generous and willing to share? What helps you grow in generosity?
