Memorize and Reflect
He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. (Psalm 78:5-6)Prayer Direction
Legacy of Faith: A multigenerational line of Christ-followers resulting from the intentional attitudes and actions of those who came before them. Celebrate the legacy accounting for the faith of the one who told you about the love of Jesus. Pray for God’s provision and perspective as you determine to pass that legacy forward to the next generation.“Live It!” Challenge
Identify someone you know who has an “inherited” faith. Be the catalyst to help them discover First Generation faith for themselves. This may be one-on-one opportunities or guiding them to rich resources to foster faith.Small Group Discussion
Read: Psalm 78:1-8 How many generations are accounted for in verses 5-7?
How many generations are represented in your family of faith? Can you identify the first generation of faith in your family? If you or your household are the first in this regard, what do you want to build into this for the next generation?
For those who are not the first generation of faith in their family line, describe how you came to move from the inherited faith of parents or grandparents, to having a direct relationship with Jesus. What role did parents play in you personalizing your faith?
Identify a faith legacy attitude or action that stands out in your family of origin, positive or negative. Do you currently mirror that in your own faith walk? Should it be enhanced, or eliminated?
The Likelihood Principle states that, in the context of a healthy relationship, children tend to embrace the beliefs and values of their parents. Read Ephesians 6:4. How does this verse relate to this principle? What is one value you caught, or rejected, from parents because of the type of relationship you had? How does this reflect on the relationships you currently desire to have influence in?
Head back to Psalm 78:5-8. What is the “lens” God provided for the nation Israel to see their way forward? Now read Judges 2:6-13, 17:1-6. What lenses are providing vision for the people?
What lenses do you use to help you view the world around you? How do you intentionally share your “glasses” with others?
Read: Deuteronomy 6:5-9 What does Moses say God wants communicated to the next generations? Read Deuteronomy 6:7-9 again. How would you translate the six instructional venues into your world today?
