Memorize and Reflect

"You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also." (Matthew 5:38-39)

Prayer Direction

Confess the times you have retaliated and sought revenge when you should have extended grace. Pray for courage and strength to serve in ways that are above and beyond what is expected and ask for Jesus to be revealed in your acts of service.

“Live It!” Challenge

Surprising Service: Identify one way you can serve someone in your home, school, workplace, or neighborhood. Make a commitment to serve in a way that will be unexpected and totally above and beyond. When the opportunity presents itself, be sure to give Jesus credit and glory for whatever you have done.

Small Group Discussion

  1. In so many movies and books, the highlight and culmination of the story line is when someone gets vindication, gets even, or the bad guy gets it! Tell about one book or movie you know that ends this way…why do people love these endings?

  2. Read: Matthew 5:31-42
What is shocking, strange, or surprising in this passage?

  3. If we followed Jesus’ exhortations in this passage literally (with no historical context) what would this mean for how we live our lives? Why is it critical that we take time to investigate and understand the historical background of what Jesus is saying?

  4. Jesus calls us to be ready to be insulted and publicly embarrassed and not respond in like kind. When are times when it could be appropriate to accept insults and how could this bring glory to Jesus and advance His gospel?

  5. Jesus calls us to be willing to give up our rights and privileges for the sake of His gospel and kingdom work. What are some situations a Christian could refuse to defend their rights and how could this further the cause of Jesus?

  6. Jesus calls us to be willing to serve above and beyond what anyone would expect or even ask! What are ways you could serve in the coming weeks that would be shocking and surprising? How could God use this humble and intentional service to bring glory to Jesus?

  7. What is some act of service that your group could do together that would impact a family in your church, on of your church leaders, or someone in your community?
