Memorize and Reflect

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.(Romans 8:28-29)

Prayer Direction

This week, spend time praying through the characteristics of love listed in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. Spend time confessing where these characteristics are weak or nonexistent in your own life. Spend time asking the Lord to fill you with more of them. Spend time considering how God in Christ has shown you these characteristics himself and give thanks to him for those times.

“Live It!” Challenge

Become a Reflector Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal one characteristic of Jesus that you want to live out more fully in the week to come. Dedicate yourself to doing this. Ask someone you trust to hold you accountable to this over the coming days.

Small Group Discussion

  1. Read: Romans 8:1-4. According to the passage, how did Jesus set us free from sin? How does the sacrifice of Jesus provide us with motivation to live holy lives?

  2. Paul talks about the “law of sin and death,” indicating that even now, this power can be at work within us. As you feel comfortable, share one area where you can still feel this power at work within your life. Share one way you have felt the power of the Holy Spirit working within you, empowering you to overcome this force.

  3. Read: Romans 8:5-6. According to the passage, what is the role of our thought life in the effort to become holy? What is the role of the Holy Spirit in helping us overcome areas of sin?

  4. What do you think it means to have a “mind governed by the Spirit”? What does Paul indicate will result from allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us?

  5. Read: Romans 8:14-15. In this passage, Paul tells us that God is our Father. What are three or four implications of this truth?

  6. How does your experience with an earthly father help you understand the role of God as Father more clearly? How does your experience with an earthly father contrast with the idea of God as Father?

  7. Read: 1 John 3:1-3. John tells us that when we see Jesus we will become like him. How are we able to “see” Jesus right now?

  8. Share one aspect of Jesus’ character that you would like to see more fully evident in your life. Why is this characteristic so compelling for you? How would your life be transformed if this characteristic is woven more fully into your character?
