Memorize and Reflect

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45

Prayer Direction

Thank Jesus for being your perfect example of humble service. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your heart and eyes to see the needs around you and give you strength to serve in the name of Jesus. Pray that others will see Jesus and draw closer to Him when they see your life and acts of humble service.

“Live It!” Challenge

My Foot Washing Project – In our world, we don’t do a lot of foot washing anymore. But, the example of Jesus was not really about the specific act of washing feet. He was showing us what radical and humble service looks like. Think about an act of service you can offer someone else that would be surprising and unexpected. Commit to offer this service and pray that God will show His presence as you serve in His name.

Small Group Discussion

  1. Who is one Christian in your life that has been an example of humble service? Describe how they serve others and explain how you see Jesus alive in the life of this person.

  2. Read: John 13:1-11. What do you learn about the heart and lifestyle of Jesus in this passage?

  3. If you had been at that table and Jesus came to wash your feet, how do you think you would have responded to his act of humble service?

  4. Read: John 13:1-3. What were some of the things Jesus knew about himself, the Enemy, and Judas as he washed the feet of the disciples? Why does this matter?

  5. Respond to this statement: The more we know who we are in Jesus and the more we feel the power of the Holy Spirit filling us, the more we will serve others.

  6. Read: 13:4-5. Jesus dove into his role as a servant with no caution! Why do you think Jesus picked such a humbling kind of service and why did he do it with such total commitment? How is this an example for us?

  7. Read: 13:6-11. What do you learn about Peter as you look at his interaction with Jesus in this passage? What do you learn about Jesus as he speaks to Peter?

  8. Who is a person in your life that you feel God wants you to serve with greater frequency and humility? What is the next step you can take in serving this person and how can your group members pray for you and cheer you on?

  9. Is there some act of service you could offer as a group? What can you do and when will you do it?
