Memorize and Reflect

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day (2 Timothy Psalm 96:1-2)

Prayer Direction

Ask God to help you sing, praise, and lift Him up with renewed and increased passion! Confess anything that is distracting you from making time to listen to God and ask for the power to change your lifestyle to make more time and space to be quiet and in God’s presence.

“Live It!” Challenge

Mini-Retreats: Plan two mini-retreats this week where you spend 15-20 minutes with no technology, unplugged, no distractions…Just be quiet and humbly ask God speak to you. Let Him know that you are ready to hear and follow His will for your life.

Small Group Discussion

  1. Tell about how you were taught to pray and worship. Who taught you, what lessons did you learn, and have these lessons been helpful?

  2. Read: Matthew 6:5-8.
Why do you think Jesus gives such a firm warning in this passage? What are some of the ways we can get into mindless habits of prayer that really become reciting empty words rather than having authentic relationship and communication with God?

  3. What can we do to keep our prayers and worship of God fresh and alive with the presence of the Holy Spirit?

  4. Read: Psalm 96:1-2 & Isaiah 42:10.
Why do you think singing is so important to the heart of God? What would you say to a Christian who says, “I don’t like singing so I don’t really sing at church or when I am alone”? How do you think God feels about this kind of attitude?

  5. Read: John 10:1-10.
Jesus is clear that those who are followers of Jesus can recognize His voice. God speaks to us in many ways, what are ways that you recognize when God is speaking to you? Why is it critical that we measure everything we feel the Lord is saying against the teaching of the Bible?

  6. How can busyness, mental clutter, and distractions keep us from gaining momentum in the area of our prayer life and worship of God? What are some distractions you face and how can you push some of these aside so you can grow in your communication with God?

  7. As you look back over the past six months, do you see yourself gaining spiritual momentum in the area of communication with God? What can you do to remove momentum busters in this area of your spiritual life?

  8. Tell about how you were taught to pray and worship. Who taught you, what lessons did you learn, and have these lessons been helpful?
