Memorize and Reflect

Malachi 3:1
“I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty.

Prayer Direction

Thank God for His faithfulness to fulfill all His promises ultimately in Jesus. Thank Jesus for His willingness to come to us, perfectly model life for us, and sacrificially give His life for us. Ask God to show you any area where you need to trust Him more or to fully submit to His plan and purpose. Commit to fast and pray this week as you seek to discern your response and next steps.

“Live It!” Challenge

Look for opportunities this week to step out in faith. Identify potential obstacles that may be causing you to doubt God’s Word or purpose for your life. Make a list of these items and commit to pray and seek God through His Word and wise counsel. As you receive wisdom, take meaningful steps to fully submit to God’s will and take steps of faith in each of these situations.

Small Group Discussion

  1. What is one of your favorite surprise Christmas gifts? Share what it was and why it was so special and memorable.

  2. Recognizing that life’s surprises are not always good, what is a time when you have been surprised by life? In that situation, how did you experience God’s presence and see His faithfulness in action?

  3. Read: Malachi 3:1 and Malachi 4:5-6. What do these verses point to and why are they important for us as we consider God’s plan for salvation and Jesus’ coming?

  4. Read: Luke 1:5-25. What were some of the challenges and obstacles facing Zechariah? How did God show both mercy and grace to Zechariah despite his doubting and disbelief?

  5. Although Zechariah’s situation was unique only to him, we all face situations in life that challenge our faith and stretch our faith. Is there something you are facing right now that is challenging or stretching your faith? Any areas where doubt may be creeping in?

  6. Read: Luke 1:67-79. When we remember God’s goodness and remember His faithfulness to us through Jesus, it should move us to worship Him at a whole new level in our life, in our actions, and in our words of praise. How does Zechariah’s response in song inspire us to do likewise?
