John 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.Prayer Direction
Ask the Holy Spirit to show you the hurdles and roadblocks you face in your personal spiritual growth. Pray for power and courage to press forward to grow up in faith, even when it is challenging.“Live It!” Challenge
Keep Your Eyes on the Prize – Identify one area you need to grow up in faith. You might want to take the Spiritual Growth Self-Assessment and identify the area you most need to grow (from the seven markers of maturity). Set one or two personal growth goals in this area and really work at it for one month. Have a friend keep you accountable and pray for you. As you keep your eyes on the prize of growing up in faith, see what God does.Small Group Discussion
What has been an ongoing obstacle or hurdle that seems to get in the way of your spiritual growth?
Read: Matthew 16:24-25. Sometimes people try to present the Christian faith as easy and all about the blessings we get when we follow Jesus. What does Jesus say about what it means to follow Him? What do you think Jesus would say to a preacher who gets up and tells people, “If you follow Jesus, everything will go your way and you’ll never suffer?”
What do you think it looks like to deny yourself and take up your cross every day as you follow Jesus? How have you experienced this reality?
Read: Matthew 4:1-3. What are some of the temptations and stumbling blocks the devil seeks to put in front of Christians to keep them from following Jesus with increasing passion and devotion?
What is one tactic you have seen the enemy use to keep you from following Jesus with full devotion and how have you learned to battle against this tactic?
Read: Hebrews 12:1-3. Picture the saints of the church from the ancient past and the believers you know who have gone to be with Jesus all gathered to watch you and cheer you on as you run the race of faith. How would it impact you if you really saw these people (in glory) cheering you on?
Why is it important to remember those who have finished the race in faith as you follow Jesus today?
Read: John 14:1-4. Heaven awaits us. How does remembering this help as we follow Jesus today? How can the hope of heaven empower you to turn from sin and follow Jesus fully?
What are some of the blessings and prizes we can receive in this life as we follow Jesus with faithful hearts?
