Day 1 READ: 1 Samuel 25:1-13
Key Verse: "His name was Nabal, and his wife’s name was Abigail. She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband was surly and mean in his dealings—he was a Calebite."— 1 Samuel 25:3
Reflection Questions:
1. What do you learn about the character and temperament of both Abigail and Nabal?
2. How had David and his men served Nabal and his workers? Why does this matter in the biblical account?
3. How is the conflict rising through this passage, and where does it seem to be leading?
4. If we want to be peacemakers, why is it essential for us to know the backstory and sources of conflict?
Day 1 PRAY: Pray for eyes to see the source of conflict before you seek to make things right. Ask God to help you learn what it means to be a peacemaker and not someone who covers over real conflict.
Day 2 READ: 1 Samuel 25:14-17 Key Verse: "Now think it over and see what you can do, because disaster is hanging over our master and his whole household. He is such a wicked man that no one can talk to him."— 1 Samuel 25: 17
Reflection Questions:
1. When Abigail hears the story of what happened, what do you think is running through her mind?
2. Why was disaster coming to Abigail’s household, and why was her response to this situation so important?
3. Tell about a time you saw conflict on the horizon and how you tried to bring peace before the storm came. Were you successful in these efforts?
Day 2 PRAY: Pray for humility to listen to other people who want you to know about possible conflict on the horizon. Thank God for times you were able to bring peace before there was a big eruption or conflict.
Day 3 READ: 1 Samuel 25:18-31 Key Verse: "My lord will not have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed or of having avenged himself. And when the Lord your God has brought my lord success, remember your servant.."— 1 Samuel 25:31
Reflection Questions:
1. What were some of the wise responses of Abigail to the situation she was facing?
2. What do you learn about peacemaking from her example and how might you use this lesson in your life?
3. What do you learn about the connection between gracious and wise words and the potential for relational peace?
Day 3 PRAY: Ask God to help you speak in ways that bring peace in relational times of conflict. Repent of the times you have spoken and acted harshly and ended up adding fuel to times of conflict.
Day 4 READ: 1 Samuel 25:32-38 Key Verse: "May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed this day and from avenging myself with my own hands."— 1 Samuel 25:33
Reflection Questions:
1. How did David’s heart and actions change because of Abigail's peacemaking efforts?
2. How would the situation in this text have been dramatically different if Abigail had not courageously stood up and sought after peace?
3. What is a situation filled with turmoil and conflict you are facing, and how might you be a conduit of peace if you followed the example of Abigail?
Day 4 PRAY: Pray for eyes to see where God has brought peace in your heart and life through the efforts of others. Thank God for people in your life who have been peacemakers and made a difference in your life.
Day 5 READ: Matthew 5:9 and 1 Samuel 25:39-44 Key Verse: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."— Matthew 5:9
Reflection Questions:
1. David is clear that Nabal’s folly could have caused him to sin? How can the wrong attitudes and actions of others trip us up and lead us to sin if we are not wise and on our guard?
2. How did Abigail continue to make wise choices and speak gracious words… and how did this impact her future?
3. What is a way that God blessed you after a time you faced conflict (but committed yourself to be a peacemaker instead of being sucked into the conflict)?
Day 5 PRAY: Pray for friends and family members who are facing turmoil. Ask God to bring His peace into this person’s life. Thank God for His many blessings that come during hard times of life.
