View Sermon Notes →
Day 1 READ: Matthew 7:1-17. What is Jesus communicating to His followers? Does Jesus give His followers a free pass on exercising judgment and discernment when interacting with other people? Why would he emphasize this point to His disciples and those listening to His Sermon on the Mount?
Day 1 PRAY: Take a moment to pause and reflect on these verses. Are there times you find yourself being judgmental? Write down what these times are and identify any commonalities among them (i.e., when under stress, at the workplace, on the drive to work). Confess these areas to God, ask Him to help you turn to Him in prayer when similar events lead you into these unhealthy patterns in the future.
Day 2 READ: John 8:1-11. How do the religious leaders demonstrate judgmentalism in enforcing God’s law? How does Jesus embody grace and truth in his response? How does Jesus show compassion without condoning the woman’s actions?
Day 2 PRAY: Thank God for His gift of grace and His love for you, which provide a way for you to be forgiven of your sins through Jesus. Invite Him to show you how you can be more gracious in dealing with others in your life.
Day 3 READ: John 3:1-21. As you read this chapter, you see this powerful interaction between Jesus and one of Israel’s most respected religious leaders. What consistent themes do you see Jesus imparting to Nicodemus as they interact? How does this encourage you to share what you believe with others, especially with those who may be considered religious or academic elites?
Day 3 PRAY: Find space in your schedule this week to quietly pray and invite God to open a door for you to have a meaningful spiritual conversation with someone in your life who doesn’t yet know Jesus. Ask God to open a door, and for the courage to step through the door He opens with grace and truth.
Day 4 READ: Hebrews 5:11-14. What does this passage suggest about discernment and judging wisely? How does a follower of Jesus grow in discernment? What is this passage warning us about?
Day 4 PRAY: Thank Jesus for His eternal Word of truth. Thank God for His generous wisdom He provides when we ask. Thank the Holy Spirit for His revealing and convicting of sin and His warning of evil and sinful practices. Ask God to show you any areas where you might be susceptible to compromise or in danger of temptation. Write these areas down and share with a trusted friend/loved one who will pray for you and hold you accountable.
Day 5 READ: John 7:14-24. What was the context of this passage? How did Jesus experience judgmental attitudes and actions from the Pharisees? How did He respond to them (v. 24)? What warning is there here for us?
Day 5 PRAY: Pause and thank Jesus for His willingness to endure personal slander, attacks, torture, abandonment, and death in order to make way for you to be forgiven of your sins. Invite Him to show you any attitudes or actions that may not reflect a heart of gratitude and a life motivated by grace.

Memorize and Reflect

Matthew 7:1-2
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
