Day 1 READ: James 2:14-17. What do you think might have been happening within the early church that caused James to write this portion? How important to the early church was caring for one another in real and tangible ways?
Day 1 PRAY: Take a moment to thank God for the gift of grace He offered you without you having to earn His favor! Thank Him as well that He has gifted you with being part of a church body that cares for one another and does real life together. Ask Him to show you how you can be more engaged in the life of your home church this year. Follow through on what He reveals to you.
Day 2 READ: James 2:18-19. What is James saying here about the importance of a faith that is moved to action? What are some of the dangers of taking these verses to mean “the more we do, the more God will love me”?
Day 2 PRAY: Thank God for His call in our lives and His equipping us with the Holy Spirit. Invite Him to show you how to be more active in your faith by serving, giving, sharing, and engaging in Christian community. Take one step this week to live out your faith in practical ways.
Day 3 READ: James 2:20-24. As you read this passage, how does the life of Abraham reveal to us the importance of trusting, obeying, and living out our faith actively? What are the pitfalls of Christians who make a profession of faith, but their lives do not show any evidence of spiritual fruit or growth?
Day 3 PRAY: Take some time today and get alone with God. Do an inventory of your life today and assess where in your walk with Jesus you have experienced growth in your faith. What were the contributing factors to those growth points in your faith? Ask God to show you an area in your faith walk that needs extra attention and intentionality this week.
Day 4 READ: James 2:25-26 and Matthew 5:15-16. How do James' words here echo the words of Jesus to His disciples? Does this mean that our good deeds earn us salvation or a better standing with God? How can faith in action through good deeds lead others to Jesus?
Day 4 PRAY: Thank God for His amazing grace and His unconditional love for you. Ask Him to show you different ways you can live out your faith in practical ways this week as you look for opportunities to do good deeds for others.
Day 5 READ: Hebrews 11. How does this chapter in the Bible both encourage you and challenge you as you read the list of names in this chapter? What bold steps of faith are you willing to take as you reflect on the courage and boldness of these different faithful followers? What are you willing to risk to follow Him and see others come to know Him?
Day 5 PRAY: Pause and thank Jesus for these powerful examples of faith in action. Invite Him to show you your next bold step of faith this week and into this year!

Memorize and Reflect

James 2:14
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?
