Day 1 READ: James 5:7-9. What do you think might have been happening within the early church that caused James to write this portion? Why does He reference the Lord’s coming, and why does that allow us to endure with greater patience (both in the waiting and with people?
Day 1 PRAY: Take a moment to thank Jesus that He is coming again to make all things right! Thank Him for His grace that covers you and the promises He has waiting for you. Invite Him to show you an area in your life where you need to exercise more patience. Ask Him to show you one practical step today that you can take to grow in this area.
Day 2 READ: James 5:10-12. What is James saying here about the importance of patience and the examples of the prophets in the Old Testament and men like Job? How does that encourage you in whatever trial you might be facing?
Day 2 PRAY: Thank God for His never-ending patience and unconditional love for you. Thank Him for meeting you where you were, and for challenging you to become more like Jesus this past year and in this season of your life. Invite Him to give you a fresh sense of His peace, patience, and presence with you as you walk into the rest of this day.
Day 3 READ: James 5:13-15. As you read this passage, what might have been happening within the early church? What is the significance of the oil and anointing? Why is it essential that believers are humble and willing to seek others to pray for them when they are ill, injured, or struggling?
Day 3 PRAY: Take some time today to consider any area of your life that might need healing (physical, spiritual, emotional, mental, or financial). Ask God to show you one person you respect, trust, and have a relationship with that would be willing to pray for you today. As the Lord reveals to you, follow through by reaching out to that person and asking them.
Day 4 READ: James 5:15-18. How does James distinguish between physical sickness and spiritual illness? Does this imply that every illness is the byproduct of personal sin? Why is seeking prayer under both conditions essential to draw near to God and share with others while seeking healing?
Day 4 PRAY: Thank God for His amazing grace and His unconditional love for you. Ask Him to show you different ways you can live out your faith in practical ways this week as you look for opportunities to do good deeds for others.
Day 5 READ: James 5:19-20. Why are these verses so essential in the wake of the discussion previously on sin and sinful living? What does James mean when he says “will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins”? Who in your life might be someone wandering in their faith, and what role do you believe God is calling you to play in that situation?
Day 5 PRAY: Pause and thank Jesus for His snatching you out of the fire and rescuing you. Invite Him to show you meaningful steps you can take to reach out and encourage the friend or family member who might be wandering from the truth.
Memorize and Reflect
James 5:7-8
Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.
