Week 4: Real Faith In A Trash-Talking World

Our words matter to God. They are a sign of spiritual maturity (or immaturity.) The potential for damage through spoken or written words is greater than most of us imagine. Followers of Jesus can buffer their hearts against undeserved pain that comes through the trash talk of others. We can also seek God’s help as we learn to control our words and not hurt others with our trash talk! When we are truly led by the Holy Spirit, our words can become a fountain of blessing to those close to us, to God, and to the world.

Life isn’t neat and tidy, and neither are the challenges many of us face in our day to day lives. We don’t want a shallow faith that just tells people, “Keep your eye on the prize”. We are hungry for more clarity and something that stands up to the toughest of times and the winds and waves of culture. We are hungry for Real Faith! One of the Bible's best books to address this is the Book of James, which was written to inspire, encourage, challenge, and equip the early church with real life practices in the face of overwhelming persecution and cultural corruption. Just as it brought comfort, confidence, and courage to the 1st Century followers of Jesus then, it can still do the same for us today!
