Memorize and Reflect

"… Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other…" (Nehemiah 4:17 )

Prayer Direction

Lord of power, give me strength to press through the challenges and struggles I am facing today, in the power of Jesus! Pray for courage and boldness to press through the challenges you are facing today. Ask God to help you identify where you need to fight and stand strong against opposition to God’s will for your life..

“Live It!” Challenge

A Brick and a Sword:Sometimes pressing through demands hard work (stacking bricks). At other times in involves fighting spiritual resistance and people who are standing against God’s will for your life (carrying a sword). Identify one way you need to work harder and one way you need to fight harder to accomplish God’s will in your life.

Small Group Discussion

  1. What is one situation in your life where you believe God wants you to press through, but you know you face a battle ahead? What are some of the obstacles you are facing?

  2. Read: Nehemiah 1:10 and Nehemiah 2:19-20
What are some of the ways people use their words (mocking, ridicule, lies) to seek to discourage us or get us off God’s plan and mission for our life? Why is it important for us to speak the truth (to ourselves and others) in these moments?

  3. Nehemiah and the people of God worked together and partnered in their efforts to rebuild the wall and accomplish God’s plans. Who are people God has placed in your life that help you and give support when you are pressing through hard times? How do they help you and why is this so valuable?

  4. Read: Nehemiah 4:1-6
How did the enemies of Nehemiah taunt and seek to discourage him? What role did prayer play as he battled back?

  5. Why is prayer needed as you press through the difficult situations you face?

  6. Read: Nehemiah 4:10-12
The people of Israel faced real discouragement. What are some of the things that can discourage you when you are seeking to follow God’s leading in your life?

  7. Read: Nehemiah 4:16-23
What are ways you need to carry bricks (work hard) and carry a sword (be ready to fight and stand strong)? Why is it important that we are continually ready to do both of these things?

  8. Read: Nehemiah 6:16-19
Once the wall was finished, you would think that the attacks would stop. But, they continued. Why is it important that we be ready for continued attacks and resistance to us really following God’s will for our lives? What are ways you can fortify your heart and life and make sure you are ready to battle and resist the enemies attacks?
