Memorize and Reflect

But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. (Matthew 24:36)

Prayer Direction

Thank Jesus for His first coming in humility, sacrifice, and love. Thank Him that He will come again in glory, power, and victory! Ask for power to live for Jesus every day until He comes again or until He brings you home. Ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to share His Good News with those who do not know His love and forgiveness.

“Live It!” Challenge

Make a List – Take time to make a list of ten things you would be sure to do if you knew that Jesus would be returning in exactly thirty days. Then, see how many of these things you can check off your list in the next month. Be sure your list is not silly things you would do if you did not have to worry about consequences. Make a list of the things you know Jesus would delight in you doing!

Small Group Discussion

  1. If you knew Jesus was going to return at midnight tonight, what would you do today that you know would bring Him joy and delight? What keeps you from doing that very thing today?

  2. How would your normal day be different if you really believed Jesus was returning soon?

  3. Read: Matthew 24:3 and Matthew 24:37-39 What does this passage seem to say about the time in history and the kind of day it will be when Jesus returns?

  4. Read: Matthew 24:6-11 What are some of the signs that will come before the return of Jesus and how do you see these signs in the world today? How have these signs been visible in past generations?

  5. It seems strange that Jesus says He will return at a time no one will really expect, yet He also says there will be signs before He returns. How can both of these be true? What do you think Jesus is getting at with these two lines of thinking?

  6. Read: Matthew 24:36 What is Jesus getting at with these words and this warning? What are some of the dangers of trying to guess when Jesus will return? How do bold and public predictions of the end of the world and Jesus’ return make Christians look bad?

  7. Read: Matthew 24:42-46 Jesus calls us to be ever ready for His return, but also ready to live for Him until He returns. Why is it critical that Christians take both of these exhortations seriously? What are some potential problems that can come when a Christian lives like Jesus is coming in the next few weeks or months and stops living as one prepared to follow Jesus for years to come (if He does not return right away)?

  8. Read: Ephesians 4:12-15 While we await the glorious return of Jesus, we are called to grow in our faith and spiritual maturity. What are steps we can take to live more for Jesus and become more like Jesus as we anticipate His return? What is one step you need to take in the coming weeks and how can others pray for you and encourage you in this area of growth?

  9. Read: Matthew 9:35-38 Who is one person you love and care about who has not yet put their faith and trust in Jesus? How can you pray for them, love them, and share the truth of Jesus more clearly and boldly with them in the coming weeks?
